UMKC IHD specializes in developing partnerships for effective social change. Last week, IHD kicked off a new collaboration bringing people together in an organized, statewide effort to promote “Supported Decision Making” (SDM) as a preferred alternative to guardianship for adults with disabilities.
The Missouri Consortium on Supported Decision Making is an outgrowth of the SDM Symposium held on September 12. UMKC IHD and our allies in the Missouri Developmental Disabilities Network, Missouri Protection and Advocacy (MO P&A) and the Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council (MODDC), organized and supported the event, which featured nationally recognized SDM legal expert Jonathan Martinis.
The Consortium identified and prioritized strategies and tools to inform Missourians about SDM and broke into work groups to continue progress between meetings. The group will reconvene in five to six months to share what has been done and plan next steps.
